Soft fold, tailored finish
Custom Roman Shades from VU Window Treatments in Central Florida
Fabric that folds neatly when raised and lies flat when lowered, for rooms where a hard treatment feels too severe.
Elegance and functionality
Softness Without Full Drapery
A roman shade sits between a blind and a curtain. It gives you the texture and warmth of fabric without the bulk of drapery panels stacking either side of the opening, which matters in rooms where wall space is tight.
Because the fabric folds into itself as it rises, the stack sits neatly at the top of the window rather than pooling. Well made, the folds stay even for the life of the shade, which comes down to the internal rigging and the weight of the lining.
- Flat fold for a clean, tailored look
- Hobbled fold for permanent soft loops and more depth
- Relaxed style with a gentle curve along the bottom edge
- Blackout or thermal lining where the room needs it
Fabric and lining
The Lining Does More Than the Fabric
Customers choose roman shades on the face fabric, and quite right. But the lining is what determines how the shade performs. An unlined linen will glow beautifully and do almost nothing about heat. The same fabric with a thermal lining behaves completely differently.
In Central Florida we almost always recommend at least a standard lining, and a blackout or thermal lining on anything west facing. It also protects the face fabric from fading, which is the main way a roman shade in Florida reaches the end of its life.
Styles
Roman Shade Styles We Make
The fold style changes the character of the room more than the color does.
Flat fold
A smooth face when lowered, with crisp horizontal folds when raised. The most contemporary of the three and the easiest to keep looking sharp.
Hobbled fold
Permanent soft loops down the face whether raised or lowered. More traditional, more fabric, and considerably more presence in a room.
Relaxed
No rods along the bottom, so the hem falls into a gentle smile. Casual, and well suited to coastal and cottage interiors.
Top-down bottom-up
Lowers from the top as well as rising from the bottom, so you can keep the lower half covered for privacy while daylight comes in above.
Blackout lined
A full blackout layer behind the face fabric for bedrooms and media rooms, with side channels available if you want to close the light gap.
Cordless lift
Standard on our roman shades. No hanging cords, which is both safer and cleaner looking.

In living areas and bedrooms, yes. We would avoid them directly over a bath or shower, and in a kitchen we would suggest a fabric that can be spot cleaned easily. Everywhere else they behave well, provided the room is air conditioned like a normal Florida house.
Any fabric in direct Florida sun will eventually fade, which is true of every manufacturer. A good lining takes the majority of the UV before it reaches the face fabric and dramatically extends its life. Fade is not covered by any manufacturer warranty, ours included.
Yes, and it works well. A motorized roman lifts evenly every time, which keeps the folds sitting correctly. It is a sensible upgrade on tall windows.
Vacuum gently with a brush attachment every few months and spot clean marks promptly with a cloth and a little mild detergent. Do not machine wash them. For anything more serious, a specialist blind cleaning service is the safe route.
Roughly one inch of stack for every foot of shade height as a rough guide, so a seven foot shade will take around seven inches at the top when fully raised. Mounting the headrail above the opening keeps the glass clear.
